My Forest Botany Students

This is part of my first batch students, who is taking diploma in forestry at UPM, Bintulu Campus. During their 2nd semester, they have to take Forest Botany (FHP 2107) course. This is their 1st outing trip to Lambir Hill NP, Miri. It was full of fun especially during the forest plants and trees identification. Handling them is not an easy task especially some of them is never been masuk hutan and have to identify something that are allien to them.

There are asign to do their given task in group and somehow, they manage to do their task well with the help of academics & non-academic staf available. After the field worked, every group have to summit their finding ( at least 60 species for each group) and present their report.

Everybody was letih & muka masam but still manage to smile when they realized that i m taking their photo. Well, Goodbye Lambir.....for now! Will come back later.........

The arrival of new friends from Philippines.........at Terminal 2 Kota Kinabalu airport!

Two weeks ago, i went to Sabah for Rafflesia Study Tour with friends from Philippines. It was an interesting trip and we visited a few Rafflesia Study sites such as Tambunan Rafflesia Conservation Centre, Crocker Range Station at Keningau, Mahua Waterfall, Poring Hotspring and Kinabalu Park. Most of the places that we visited is managed by Sabah Park except Tambunan Rafflesia Centre.

Anyway, otw to Croker Range Station Keningau, we stop by di Tambunan Rafflesia Conservation Centre Tambunan, hopping that we can see blooming Rafflesia but nampak gaya sangat menghampakan because not even one Rafflesia pricei yang blooming dengan elok. 3 of the flower at plot 54 (one of the research plot monitored by the Sabah Forestry Team) we found seems 2b aborted. So, tak boleh ambil gambar yang full bloom la. After bollywooding session with krepot rafflesia, we took our late lunch di Tambunan town.

We stayed overnite at Crocker Range Station. After we settle down at our 'Guess House', En. Alim bring us to Rafflesia and Rhizanthes site, hanya about 15 - 20 minutes from the Guess House. Dalam perjalanan ke site, sempat juga botanizing and bollywooding a bit.

On the 2nd day, our group go to Mahua Waterfall for sightseeing and botanizing purposes. During my first trip to this place was for my Rafflesia pricei project sampling purposes in 2005. Actually di Mahua ada 2 Rafflesia site yang sentiasa ada mengeluarkan bud and blooming flower. Somehow, lately this 2 site seems to be inactive, meaning to say tidak mengeluarkan bud baru sejak beberapa bulan yang lepas (2007). Ini kemungkinan disebabkan keadaan cuaca yang agak kering pada masa ini.

Beside that, otw ke waterfall, banyak pokok-pokok yang besar boleh dijumpai and photograph with, such as this one..........boleh main hide and seek oooo, gerenti tak jumpa punya...!!!

After di Mahua Waterfall, kami terus Mesilau Nature Park di Ranau. Great place to visit for Malaysian and Foreigner Tourist or Scientist.

Happy Hour In Our Genetic Lab!!!!!........

This is how we spent our time in genetic lab, doing analyses on research project that we're entitled. These is my first project involving genetic study on Bornean Rafflesia. Can you imagine, me.....working with genetic molecular!!!! My..... its quite a step for me since i'm not from genetic background. Infect, i'm more interested on biology and agriculture sector rather than genetic.

Somehow, my much caring supervisor manage to converted me into this forbidden field. Now, after a year in my project, analyses after analyses.......which seems to me, never ending progress without getting the best result that we wish to get, so that we can 'gulung tikar' and just do the write-up only. There are two other lab members (Zuhailah and Nery) doing molecular genetic on different species of Rafflesia. Actually i'm working out on genetic variation on Rafflesia pricei beside their taxonomy and conservation status in Borneo.

I went back to my kampung quite recently and i noticed there is a few changes occurred to that area. A few logging site also taking place in a new area and new oil palm plantation has been started. To reach there, we have to go up river by express boat which is only cost you about RM18.00 per ride and its took about 2 hours ride. My last visit to Binyo was in 2003. I will attach a few picture on what is going on around my village for the time being.

As i remember, it is sad to think when you are going back to the longhouse, you will found out almost every household is no occupant. Most of the younger generation is working in town. Only 30- 40% of the household is occupied by the older generation.

3. Secondary forest that has been logged.

The forest has been cut and clear. The loggers left behind all the railing which they used to pulled out the log. These land here is where i used to do my botanizing and looked for my annonaceae and wild ginger but it seems i have to find somewhere else in future.

It's been more than a few months since i first create this blog. Looks like i missed out
so much. Try to catch-up a few things after i came back from my holidaying.......
Staying at home really keep me busy.

Next time i log-in, i try to put some interesting pix for viewing.........
